Cultural festival comes to Howell

HOWELL — A family-oriented event that will offer guests an opportunity to experience Russian and Slavic culture is coming to Howell this weekend.

The 10th annual Russianfest and Slavic cultural festival will be held on Sept. 21 at the St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin, 200 Alexander Ave., Howell. The event will be held noon to 7 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $5; children 12 and under are free. Parking is free.

The festival will feature many aspects of the Russian and Slavic cultures — authentic food, games, live music and dancing.

Entertainment will include a performance by the Barynya Ensemble, a Russian dance ensemble. The Troika Dance Group will perform the troika, a traditional Russian folk dance. Cultural entertainment will also be presented by the parish school performers and the liturgicial choir.

As for food, guests will enjoy shish kabobs (marinated pork), blintzes (cheesefilled pastries), borscht (Russian soup), pelmeni (Siberian meat dumplings) and kapusta (sauteed cabbage).

Traditional arts and crafts for people of all ages will afford guests a taste of the Russian and Slavic heritage.
