More than 40 candidates have applied to become the Lawrence Township public school district’s next director of health, physical education and athletics, according to school district officials.
The first round of interviews were conducted Sept. 8 and Sept. 15, said Andrew Zuckerman, the school district’s director of instructional services. The interviews were conducted by a special committee, made up of parents, students, faculty and staff.
A second round of interviews with school district officials is slated for next week, Mr. Zuckerman said. The district is "on target" to recommend a replacement for Ken Mason in time for the school board’s Oct. 8 meeting, he said.
Mr. Mason, who is retiring Dec. 31, has held the post for 16 years.
According to the job description, the director of health, physical education and athletics develops the health and physical education curriculum and coordinates the program for students in grades K-12.
The director also is the primary liaison to the school board, clubs and organizations, and community or outside agencies concerned with athletics, health and physical education.
The director recruits coaches and health and physical education teachers, and arranges for the coaching staff to attend clinics and seminars. The director also ensures that health and physical education teachers attend professional development courses.
Also, the director develops the annual budget for athletics, driver education, and health and physical education programs. He or she ensures that the athletic fields are maintained in good condition, and also coordinates the storage, inventory and distribution of athletic equipment.
The director provides a comprehensive and inclusive athletic program for boys and girls, establishes interscholastic sports schedules, and arranges for transportation to and from the games.
The director helps coaches and guidance counselors to find scholarships for outstanding student athletes, and helps them to pursue participation in college athletics.
