The South Brunswick High School Junior Varsity Girl’s Soccer team is off to a good start with a 3-1 record thus far.
The team beat East Brunswick, Piscataway and Old Bridge but suffered a loss to Monroe.
The team has 20 players on the roster, including girls from the junior, sophomore and freshmen classes.
Coach William Smith leads the JV Girl’s soccer team.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the team played against Old Bridge winning in commanding fashion 5-1.
"Today’s game was an exciting win for us against a quality Red Division opponent," said Coach Smith. "We played very well today, especially coming off of a tough loss to Monroe last week. We have always had tight, low scoring games against Old Bridge but the score line today showed the quality of our girls."
Samia Baig, Brielle Eder, Jordan Moye, and Louisa Post-Zwicker and Moriya Frankle scored the five goals.
Emily Lorber led the team defensively along with the sure handed goalie, Kate Mastro, stopping multiple shots on goal.
Coach Smith said the team practices six days a week and that he would like to see the team improve upon various aspects of the game such as playing with a sense of urgency, challenging "50/50" balls and getting better touches on the ball.
He praised the team on its hard work and team leadership.
"We have a group of girls that have solid leadership and that have embraced the new freshmen that are on the team," he said. "We seem to be playing together right now and that is a good thing."
Coach Smith said he was optimistic on having a winning season and to be a solid contender in the Greater Middlesex Conference JV Championship.
"My hope and expectation every season is to challenge for the GMC JV Championship. Since I became JV coach we have been blessed with talented, hardworking girls who want to win," He said. "That spirit has brought three JV Championships to South Brunswick. This group of girls has some returning players from last year’s team that beat East Brunswick 1-0 in the finals. They know what it takes and I expect them to help teach the younger girls what it means to be a Viking Girls Soccer player."
The Girls JV soccer team’s next home game will be played on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Montgomery High School.
