The South Brunswick Vikings football team opened up its 2014 season on a high note with a come from behind 36-24 victory over the Middletown South Eagles on the road.
The Eagles got the scoring started with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Cole Rogers.
The second half saw scoring drives capped by Vikings quarterback Amir Johnson and a fumble recovery turned into a touchdown by Syracuse University bound Dontae Strickland.
After an Eagles field goal, the teams entered the locker room at halftime with the Vikings holding a 14-10 lead.
The second half saw two Strickland touchdowns including 76 and 24 yard runs. Some quality kicking by Matt Golden iced the cake for the Vikings.
"Coach Goerge called a counter-option short play, everything went as expected," said Strickland after the game. "I saw grass and kept on running to the goal line."
"The touchdown really got us going and then the scoop-and score gave us the momentum that we needed," said Head Coach Joe Goerge after the game.
Strickland ended the game with 15 carries for 149 rushing yards. Quarterback Amir Johnson carried 18 times for a total of 77 yards.
Johnson completed four passes in eight attempts for 67 total yards.
The Vikings play tonight at J.P. Stevens High School in Edison. Game time is 7 p.m.
