 School cheerleaders to wash cars
Saturday, Sept. 20 — Hillsborough High School’s competition cheer team is hosting a car wash fundraiser, 7 to 11 a.m. at Applebee’s on Route 206 in Hillsborough. $5 per car and $7 per van or truck.
South Branch church holds dinner
Sat., Sept. 20 — A ham dinner and bake sale will be held at South Branch Reformed Church, 870 River Road, 4:30-7 p.m. Adults $14, children 6-12 $6, children 5 and under eat free. Call the church office for reservations (not required but suggested) at 908-369-4956. Take-outs available.
Vets’ appreciation day features rides
Sat., Sept. 20 – Hillsborough Rotary Club and Operation Shoebox sponsors Veterans Appreciation Day to benefit Operation Chillout, a homeless veterans outreach, at Central Jersey Regional Airport, 1034 Millstone River Road, next to Pizza n Pasta. Flea market benefits fire auxiliary
Sat., Sept. 20 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 Fire Auxiliary will hold an outdoor flea market at 375 Route 206, next to Hillsborough Radiology. The market is behind the firehouse in the parking lot off Hamilton Road. Parking is on the grass behind the firehouse and in the upper parking lot. No parking at Hillsborough Radiology.

Barbecue thanks firefighters
Sun., Sept. 21 — Manville-Hillsborough Elks 2215 and Red Knights Motorcycle Club will host an end-of-summer fireman appreciation picnic and barbecue, 1-5 p.m. Music by School of Rock, Somerville. $20 per adult, $10 for 12 and younger, at 1500 Brooks Blvd., Hillsborough.
Woman’s Club to hold basket auction
Fri., Sept. 26 — Doors open at 6 p.m. for the Woman’s Club of Hillsborough’s annual basket auction at the township municipal building on South Branch Road. Entrance tickets are $10 and include door and grand prize tickets. Value packs at $20 include two sheets of tickets and a grand prize ticket, a total $27 value. Individual tickets are $12. Car wash helps wounded Iraq vet
Sat., Sept. 27 — Hillsborough High School Robotics Team 75 is holding a car wash to help with Brendan Marrocco Road to Recovery, a soldier wounded in Iraq, at the Hillsborough Elementary School, corner of Route 206 and Amwell Road, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. $5 cars and $7 trucks or vans. $2 to vacuum car.
Library to host small business expo
Sat., Sept. 27 — Learn about new local products and services and network with a variety of businesses in second annual program at Hillsborough Library in municipal complex, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Small-business support organizations will answer questions about starting a business. Ladies Night benefits cancer-fighters
Monday, Sept. 29 — The Day Spa at Hair Plus, in Nelson’s Corner on Route 206 at Amwell Road, will host a Ladies Night from 5-8. $20 donation to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and the Susan G. Komen Central and North Jersey Chapter. Tues., Oct. 14 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 sponsors a blood drive at firehouse at 375 Route 206, 2-7 p.m. Chocolate and cookies for every donor. Chance at raffle for $25 gift card. Start holiday shopping at vendor fair
Wed., Oct. 22 — The Millstone Valley Columbiettes host their 4th annual vendor fair at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 34 Yorktown Road, Hillsborough. Vendors will have cash-and-carry items. Admission is free. Begin your holiday shopping while supporting the charitable works of the Columbiettes.
Club to hear about rain barrels
Thurs., Oct. 23 — The Neshanic Garden Club’s monthly meeting at 9:45 a.m. at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 117 Sunset Road, off Route 206 in Belle Mead. Georgette Migliore will demonstrate the element of size and the principle of proportion in the finished design of flower arrangements.
The program will be presented by Dr. Christopher Obropta, specialist for the Water Resouces Program, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. He will provide a primer on the concept of the rain garden as a sustainable practice in home and community landscapes. Learn the benefits, beyond the aesthetic, of establishing a rain garden.

Continuing events
Community theater — Somerset Valley Players presents the comedy "I Hate Hamlet" until Sept. 28 at their theater at 689 Amwell Road (Route 514).
Shows are Fridays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.
