The opening of the school year — the first ever for the grades K-12 South Hunterdon Regional School District — "went very well," said Superintendent of Schools Louis Muenker at Monday night’s meeting of the district school board.
The regional district was formed after public elections last fall backed merging the Lambertville, West Amwell and Stockton elementary and South Hunterdon Regional High School districts into one. Monday night’s meeting was held at Stockton Elementary. Since being formed, the regional board has rotated holding its meetings at the elementary schools in Stockton, Lambertville and West Amwell and at the high school, also in West Amwell.
"We had a great opening of school," Dr. Muenker said. "Back-to-school nights were very successful. They were very well attended."
Dr. Muenker, who said he would attend a county workshop for superintendents of schools today, Thursday, added, "There’s a lot going on in the high school. Games and practices. The football team plays Belvidere this Friday night."
South Hunterdon Regional High School is the smallest high school in the state with a football team. The Eagles went 9-1 last year after winning their first eight games. After losing their first game, 40-34, to New Providence on the road, the Eagles defeated David Brearley, 47-25, in an offensive battle Friday night at home. During that game, the first seven inductees of the newly formed high school athletic hall of fame were introduced (see separate story).
During Monday night’s brief meeting, the school board approved the emergency purchase of a hot water heater for the high school from the firm of Ferguson, Inc., for $8,358. Also approved, for an amount not to exceed $480, was the renewal of Lethal Pest Services service plan for Lambertville Public School. Also approved, for an amount not to exceed $5,300, was an agreement with Tamke Tree Experts, for tree work on school property.
The board also approved purchase of a 3-D printer from Allegheny Educational Systems for an amount not to exceed $9,894, plus $250 for setup and training.
