Hillsborough Public Library will throw a birthday celebration of its founding on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The official "birthday cake" will be cut at 11:15. Stop by and view vintage photos and share your library stories!
Friends of the Hillsborough Library will hold its annual book sale Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Used books and media will be sold at amazing prices. Scanners are allowed beginning at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Hillsborough library.

Adult programs

ESL conversation group — Ages 18 and older can sign up for a mixed-gender English as a Second Language group in the library conference room. Must speak basic English. Ages 18 or older. Mondays, Oct. 6 and 13, at 7 p.m.
Monday Morning Playtime (for parents/caregivers) — Topics of discussion along with recommended resources on baby safety. Toys, books and activities related to the theme, shape and color will be featured. Children up to 36 months are welcome. There will be toys for them to play with. Oct. 6 and 13 at 10 a.m.
Friday night movie — "August: Osage County," starring Meryl Streep. Julia Robert and Dermot Mulroney, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
Make Time for Mammography — Women will learn about their risk for breast cancer, the different forms of screening, how to detect changes in their bodies and how to make healthy lifestyle choices. Sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset and presented by Alison Lambo, breast health outreach coordinator. Monday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
Writers group — The Hillsborough Public Library Writers Group holds its monthly meeting. Thurs., Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
Sunken locomotives — Two locomotives that pre-date the Civil War lie on the ocean floor 5 miles off the coast of New Jersey. Come hear about who found them in 1984, how they were found and what we have learned about them. Dan Lieb, president of the New Jersey Historic Divers Association, will present this program. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.
Friends of the Library book discussion — "Sycamore Row" by John Grisham is the topic. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m.
Lunchtime book discussion — "The Daughters of Mars" by Thomas Keneally, author of "Schindler’s List," will be discussed. Bring a lunch. Coffee, tea, iced tea and dessert will be provided by the Friends of the Hillsborough Public Library. Wednesday, Oct.15, at noon.
Afternoon movie — "Million Dollar Arm," starring Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi and Alan Arkin and rated PG, will be shown Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m.
Book discussion —"The Whole Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture your Child’s Developing Mind" by Daniel J. Siegel is the topic. The authors explain the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures along with advice on how to put this information to work in raising happier, calmer children. Wednesday, Oct.15, at 7 p.m.

Story & Songs (ages 2-6) — An interactive story and musical activities. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m.
Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteers (grades eight-12) — Young volunteers are needed to organize the children’s and teen’s collections, and earn community service hours in the process. This position requires a familiarity with the library, exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail.
Volunteers must commit to one hour every week. Previous experience as an Adopt-a-Shelf volunteer preferred. Fall, winter and spring sessions are available. Applications will be available in the Teen Center and must be returned to the Children’s Desk by Saturday, Oct. 4.
Special Storytime (ages 2-6) — The program asks, "What Will You Be For Halloween?" Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4, at 10 a.m.
Practice SAT test (grades nine-12) — This free Kaplan test is designed to prepare students for their exam. Bring a No. 2 pencil, a calculator and a snack, if desired. Saturday, Oct. 4, at noon.
Story Time (ages 3-6) — Help your preschool or kindergarten child get ready to read. Enjoy stories on nighttime together. No registration required. Monday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m.
First Look Books (grades six–12) — Get a sneak peek at new teen titles before they hit the shelves! Tell us what you think, and take one home. Monday, Oct. 6, at 5 p.m.
Toddler Time (2- and 3-year-olds) — Introduce books to your child with stories and songs Tuesdays, Oct. 7 and 14, at 10 a.m.

Financial aid workshop — Parents/caregivers and students in grades nine-12 can learn how to control college costs. Free workshop presented by Premier College Funding will review the financial aid application, financial aid myths, how to develop a funding plan, how to pick colleges and scholarships. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
Math Matters (ages 3-6) — Stories and STEM activities get math brains working. Thursday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m.
Kidz Art Zone (grades three-four) — Budding artists can create masterpieces with their friends. Some projects may be messy so dress in play clothes. Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m.
Baby Songs (newborn to 24 months) — Make music with your little one! Older siblings will not be allowed into this program. Friday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m.
Lego Buddies (grades eight-12) — Teen volunteers wanted to help during Lego Club programs. Must have social skills and experience with children. Volunteers will earn community service hours for attendance. Space is limited to four volunteers per session. Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2:45 p.m.
Lego Club (grades one-five) — The library supplies the Legos and you supply the creativity to build a dinosaur. Saturday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m.
Story Time (ages 3-6) — Help your preschool or kindergarten child get ready to read! Enjoy stories on apples and pumpkins together and build language skills. Monday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m.
Tail Waggin’ Tutors (grades K-four) — Each registered child will get 10 minutes practicing reading skills while Xena, a Therapy Dog International-certified dog, listens. Online registration is not available; call or stop by the Children’s Desk. Monday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m.
Teen Advisory Board (grades five-12) — Help plan teen programs and say what you’d like to see happen at the library — while enjoying treats. Attendance counts toward community service hours. Monday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.
Early Reader Book Club (grades K-two) — Enjoy "Nate the Great and the Monster Mess" by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, do some activities and make a craft. Read the book before the program. Copies available at the Children’s Desk. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
Movin’ Munchkins (ages 3-6 only) — A creative movement program for child and parent/caregiver. A release/waiver must be signed by the parent; forms are available at the Children’s Desk or online. Younger children are allowed, but must remain in strollers and cannot participate. Wednesday, Oct.15, at 10 a.m.
Garden club program (grades two-four) — Join members of the Neshanic Garden Club to make your own mosaic design. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m.
