Neshanic Garden Club members celebrated the group’s 85th anniversary at the Harlingen Reformed Church on Sept. 18.
They were treated to a flower-arranging demonstration by club member Carmella Shepley. She went over the basics from the types of containers to use, how to condition flowers (which includes trimming stems) and using certain water temperature for flower types. She stressed using the packet that comes with purchased flowers or, if necessary, to use a drop of bleach in the water to kill bacteria that may linger on stems.
Several club members spoke about their time in the club. President Barbara Zielsdorff read the official club history, which included such notes as the 50-cent annual dues when the club first began and members working for the Red Cross during World War II.
Jeannie Geremia read the history of the Garden Club of New Jersey Inc.
Club members were surprised with a meal of items formerly served at the club’s spring luncheon, which was held at the Harlingen Reformed Church for many years.
Club members are looking forward to a busy year, which includes the greens workshop Dec. 8 that will be open to the community; programs about bees, rain gardens, wildflowers and other informational meetings; and the yearly spring luncheon fundraising event April 23.
