Area mayor publishes new novel

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Author David Salkin will sign copies of his first hard-cover book, “Hard Carbon,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Barnes & Noble, Route 9, Freehold Township.

“It’s book No. 8, but it’s the first hardcover and worthy of celebrating,” said Salkin, who is currently serving as mayor of his hometown. “Having a book published in hard-cover, which is difficult, takes it to the next level.”

He said three more books are on tap for 2015. The books will be a series of three military espionage stories called “The Team.”

“The first book is completed, the second one is edited, and I am still writing the third one,” he said.

Salkin said “Hard Carbon” was written 10 years ago and was his first book.

“I always thought it would be a hardcover,” he said. “It just required a lot of patience to wait for it.”

“Hard Carbon” is published by Post Hill Press.

Salkin, who co-owns the Jewel Case jewelry store, Freehold Township, said the book is based on real science in the diamond industry.

He said authors Lisa Black and Ben Bova were “kind enough to write blurbs for the novel.”

“No one knows the diamond business like David Salkin,” Black wrote. “Combine this inside information with a terrific battle between U.S. forces and a Russian kingpin, and you have the wild ride that is ‘Hard Carbon.’ ”

“David M. Salkin’s ‘Hard Carbon’ is a taut, fast-paced thriller that takes the reader into the deadly yet fascinating world of Russian oligarchs and American intelligence agencies,” Bova wrote. “Be warned: You will have a hard time putting this one down once you start reading it.”

Salkin has previously written crime thrillers, military espionage, action adventure and horror novels. — Clare Marie Celano
