New firehouse referendum set for Oct. 14

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A referendum for a proposed new firehouse will be held for residents of Fire District No. 2 on Oct. 14 at the East Freehold Fire Company firehouse, 191 Dutch Lane Road. Residents may vote between 2 and 9 p.m.

The proposed $7 million firehouse would be built at the intersection of Kozloski and Dutch Lane roads, a short distance from the current firehouse at the corner of East Freehold and Dutch Lane roads.

The new firehouse would become the home of the East Freehold Fire Company, which serves Fire District No. 2.

Gregory Brass, chairman of Fire District No. 2, which covers Freehold Township east of Route 9, has said firefighters asked the fire district’s board of commissioners to look into building a new firehouse to better serve firefighters and the community.

The result of that examination is the fire district’s proposal for a 19,000-square-foot building with space for administrative offices, fire apparatus, training, a gym, showers, storage space and a decontamination room.

Officials said if the referendum is approved, a property owner in Fire District No. 2 would pay about $75 more per year in fire taxes.
