Friends of Library to hold book sale
Sat., Oct. 18 — Friends of the Hillsborough Library annual book sale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at library. Bargains support efforts to fund library activities and materials.
Foot race helps burn survivors
Sun., Oct. 19 — The non-profit Sons of the Flag will host a 5K run/walk at Hillsborough Fire Company No. 3 at 324 Woods Road. Registration opens at 7:15 a.m. for 8 a.m. start. Race fee $30, or $50 with T-shirt. Proceeds go towards research, funding and support for burn survivors.
Poll director to speak to Dems
Wed., Oct. 22 — David Redlawsk, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest polling and professor of political science at Rutgers University, will address the Hillsborough Democratic Alliance on New Jersey politics and polling at 7 p.m. at Avalon Assisted Living, 393 Amwell Road.
He is a former member of the Hillsborough Township Committee. He left for an academic position at the University of Iowa in 1999 and returned to New Jersey in 2009 to direct the Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

Holiday shopping at Millstone fair
Wed., Oct. 22 — Millstone Valley Columbiettes host 4th annual vendor fair at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 34 Yorktown Road. Vendors will have cash-and-carry items. Admission is free.
Panel discusses local drug trends
Wed., Oct. 22 — "Drug Trends in Our Community" will be explored in a panel discussion at the municipal building on South Branch Road, 7 p.m. Intended for the community and students in middle school and older. Film on "domino effect" of pills to heroin will be shown. Discussion will have a pastor, guidance counselor, mother, young adult in recovery and someone from the prosecutor’s office. Run by Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance.
Garden club to hear about bees
Thurs., Oct. 23 — The Neshanic Garden Club’s monthly meeting at 9:45 a.m. at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 117 Sunset Road, off Route 206 in Belle Mead. Georgette Migliore will demonstrate the element of size and the principle of proportion in the finished design of flower arrangements.
Christopher Obropta, specialist for the Water Resources Program, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, will provide a primer on the concept of the rain garden as a sustainable practice in home and community landscapes.

Murder mystery benefits theater
Fri., Oct. 24 — Hillsborough High School Theatre will host its second annual Murder Mystery Dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons at Hillsborough High School, 466 Raider Blvd.
The theme for the interactive evening of dinner, dancing and murder is "Hollywood" and red carpet dress is encouraged. Tickets are $15 per person or $105 for a table of 8. Kehilat Shalom rummage sale
Oct. 24 and 26 — Congregation Kehilat Shalom, at 253 Belle Mead–Griggstown Road in Belle Mead, will hold its annual rummage sale on Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., rain or shine. Household and kitchen items, clothing, children’s toys, tools, sports items, light furniture, books. Donations of gently used or new items will be accepted on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon and Monday to Wednesday, Oct. 20-22, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Other times can be arranged by calling the office. Bicycles in any condition will be accepted for donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton Bike Exchange Program.

Mon., Oct. 27 — Hillsborough Township’s Economic & Business Development Commission will hold a business social event on at Pheasant’s Landing Restaurant, 311 Amwell Road, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Boy Scout troop goes medieval
Sat., Oct 25 — Boy Scout Troop 489 invites boys in grades 4, 5 and 6 to its Renaissance Festival recruitment event at Camp Dewitt, starting at 1 p.m. Participate in a variety of medieval activities, including jousting, an obstacle course, a sword-fighting demonstration, knife throwing and capture the flag. Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara at dinner at Hillsborough Middle School, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mr. Amukamara will speak about football and his life lessons, questions and answers, raffle prizes and a few autographs. Wed., Nov. 5 — Jewish Family Service hosts free support groups for job seekers who are unemployed, underemployed or seeking a career change.
