The South Brunswick Republican Organization will be hosting a Colonial Day celebration at the Wetherill house tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The house which started as a small shed was begun in the mid 1700’s. The house was the main building for a farm that consisted of some 1,700 acres.
Visitors can come meet John Wetherill, the builder of Wetherill house, located at 269 George’s Road in the Dayton Section of South Brunswick Township.
Michael Jesberger, a colonial era re-enactor, with will set up a camp just like the soldiers of the Revolutionary War.
Musket firing demonstrations will be held, and kids will be able to participate in military drill and camp life activities.
Quilting demonstrations and displays will be conducted. Kids can play colonial games, such as hoops, Nine Man Morris, tops and the Graces.
Visitors will be also able to sample apple cider and cookies made from historic recipes.
Farm animals representative of a colonial farm will be present, including sheep, chickens, and a horse.
In the house there will be a display of numerous historic items including colonial money and documents signed by some of the Founding Fathers.
John Saccenti will be on hand to describe the background and significance of these items.
Proceeds after expenses will be donated to the local history section of the South Brunswick Public Library.
Admission is $8 per person or $15 per family of four. Children under 5 are free.
Besides being a large landowner, John Wetherill was a member of the colonial New Jersey Assembly representing Middlesex County.
