Plumsted mayor steps down

David Leutwyler, a member of the Plumsted Township Committee who was serving as Plumsted’s mayor in 2014, resigned from the governing body on Oct. 8.

Leutwyler, who served on the committee since 2007, said he was leaving office to seek opportunities that preclude him from holding public office.

“I love being mayor and I am sad to step down, but the township is going to be in good hands. There are just some things I need to personally pursue,” Leutwyler said this week. “I am hoping that [I will be able to discuss future plans] fairly soon. Hopefully, I did not step down for nothing and those opportunities come to fruition,” he said.

In addition to serving as mayor this year, Leutwyler also served one-year terms as Plumsted’s mayor in 2012 and 2013.

With a vacancy on the all-Republican governing body, Plumsted’s Republican municipal committee will submit the names of three Republicans to the Township Committee as possible replacements for Leutwyler.

The committee will have 15 days to select one of those individuals to fill the vacant seat.

Leutwyler said he will always remember his public service as a point of pride in his life.

“I never thought I would be mayor,” he said. “I enjoyed the work and hopefully I did a decent job.”
