Jim Cann and Jill Popko, Bordentown Township
If you have driven down Crosswicks Street lately, you might have noticed some big changes.
Our Public Works Department has expanded into the adjacent old National Fence site.
Acquiring this property saved taxpayers over a million dollars compared to our next best option for the much-needed expansion. We can now shelter our expensive equipment from the elements, extending its useful life and saving us money on repairs.
Our Class B recycling center is accepting a variety of materials such as electronics and small appliances (a complete list can be found on the township website.
As Public Works makes improvements to the site, more materials such as leaves and branches will be accepted. The small 3-foot by 6-foot area of contamination has been capped with cement, and, with that, the site is successfully remediated according to New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection standards at virtually no cost to residents.
When we took office, Bordentown Township was in financial trouble. We were deep in debt, and our bond rating was a AA-minus with a negative outlook. After two years, we improved it to AA with a stable outlook, and our overall debt has gone down.
We increased our budget surplus. This year, we lowered your municipal tax this year and are on track to do it again next year.
We have worked hard to market our township and have brought in Grainger. A national distribution center is being built, which will provide 700 jobs and $2 million dollars in new revenue, providing some relief from the burden of school taxes that we all bear.
Empty eyesores are being transformed into new businesses all over town such as the new ATT&T store. Soon Cheyenne Outfitters will fill the landmark Papp’s Bowling Center, and a new world-class Super ShopRite will take over the old Bradlees building.
Bordentown is an even more family-friendly community with township-sponsored events designed to bring us together, like the Fourth of July fireworks, Music in the Park, the Health and Wellness Fair, the Haunted Hayride and the community garden, just to name few.
And we even have a brand new dog park for our four-legged residents.
Progress is everywhere. Roads are being resurfaced under our new roads program, a new playground was just completed, parks are being spruced up, and our township is moving forward.
We are proud of what we have accomplished, but there is more to be done.
We ask for your vote to allow us to continue to make Bordentown even better for you and your family. Re-elect the team that lowered taxes, increased services and brought in new ratables.
