HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP: Man faces several charges in stabbing case

Knife assault report takes police to Denow apartment complex

Corey D, Mitchell, 35, of 725 Denow Road, Hopewell Township, has been charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose by Hopewell Township police Detective Frank Tulko, according to Hopewell Township police Chief Lance D. Maloney.
On Saturday (Nov. 8) at approximately 9:10 p.m., township police officers went to 725 Denow Road, which is located in the Hopewell Gardens apartment complex, to investigate a report of an assault with a knife.
Officers found that a 44-year-old woman had been stabbed multiple times by a 35-year-old man, a relative, in a third-floor hallway.
The victim was rushed out of the building by her boyfriend to a car in the parking lot. The boyfriend advised officers that after the attack in the hallway, the suspect, identified as Mr. Mitchell, went back into the apartment where he has been residing with his mother. Mitchell’s mother wasn’t in the apartment at the time of the attack.
The victim was treated on scene by responding officers and was then transported by the Pennington First Aid Squad to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for her injuries.
Hopewell Township police officers, under the command of Lt. Christopher Kascik, assisted by Ewing Township and Pennington Borough police departments, secured the area around the apartment after Mr. Mitchell refused to exit the apartment, the chief said.
Residents residing on the first, second and third floors of the west wing of the building were evacuated to other areas of the building as a safety precaution.
Members of the New Jersey State Police Technical Response Bureau, under the command of Capt. Ray Jacobs, and the New Jersey State Police Crisis Negotiation Team, under the command of Lt. John Gorman, also responded to the scene.
Members of the Crisis Negotiation Team made contact with the suspect and attempted to have the suspect surrender peacefully. Eventually, members of the Technical Response Team made a forced entry into the apartment and took the suspect into custody at approximately 1:10 am.
The suspect was transferred to the custody of Hopewell Township Police Department officers and was then transported to a local hospital to be evaluated. After being released from the hospital Mr. Mitchell was transported to the Hopewell Township Police Department for further investigation.
Mr. Mitchell is lodged at the Mercer County Correction Center in lieu of $250,000 full cash bail. This case is being forwarded to the Mercer County prosecutor’s office.
Evacuated residents were allowed to return to their apartments shortly after the arrest was made.
As of Wednesday,  the victim was in the hospital in stable condition.
