PENNINGTON: Election to be held on new siren

Public will vote Nov. 18

A public election on whether to buy and install a new emergency siren in Pennington, at a cost not to exceed $15,000, will be held Nov. 18.
The election will be held during the regular monthly meeting of the Pennington board of fire commissioners.
The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the 18th at the Pennington Fire Company’s station house at 120 Broemel Place.
Registered voters of Pennington will be able to vote on the siren between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. by using ballots provided at the meeting.
If approved in the election, the siren would replace an old and unrepairable siren. The new one would be placed on an existing cell phone tower next to the firehouse. The money would be raised by local (Pennington) taxation.
Members of the Pennington fire commission say the new siren is needed to help ensure that volunteers are aware that an alarm has been sounded, to warn motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that emergency service vehicles will be on the road shortly, and to alert those who have called in the alarm that help is on the way.
ALSO at its Nov. 18 meeting the, the board of fire commissioners may act to approve its proposed 2015 budget and will conduct other business. All fire commission meetings are open to the public.
The Pennington fire district includes all of Pennington Borough.
Hopewell Borough and Hopewell Township also are fire districts. Both the Pennington and the Hopewell Borough fire departments include about one-third of Hopewell Township in their legally designated service areas.
Both boroughs are less than one-square mile in size and both are surrounded by Hopewell Township, which is 58 square miles.
The only fire company in the township is Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad, based on Route 29 at the western edge of the township in Titusville.
