Marlboro receives additional military surplus from feds

MARLBORO — One month after accepting a Hummer from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Township Council has approved the delivery of additional vehicles from the same federal program.

The program permits the Department of Defense to transfer surplus military equipment to municipalities. There is no cost to municipalities that receive the items.

At its Oct. 24 meeting, the council agreed to accept two used Hummers, each valued at $190,744, a used truck valued at $111,395, and a used forklift valued at $77,000, from the federal government.

At the same meeting, the council authorized the submission of a grant application to the state Department of Transportation (DOT) for bicycle path improvements on Route 79/Station Road.

As part of the DOT’s state aid programs, funding for bicycle projects is available to counties and municipalities. Officials did not say when notification that a grant has been or will be awarded could be made.
