NORTH BRUNSWICK — Police are warning residents of a scam involving imposter Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents.
In the incidents, residents receive a phone call from an individual representing himself as an agent of the IRS, according to police. The “agent” speaks to the prospective victim kindly and warns them of an impending IRS fine or penalty. The “agent” offers to take care of the issue over the phone, as long as the victim provides account information, at which point the account is accessed and money is lost.
In other instances, the caller has the victim send a cashier’s check for a designated amount.
Police said the phone number being used usually appears on caller ID as a District of Columbia-area number, mainly the 202 area code.
The actual IRS does not conduct business in this manner by phone for money or to assess penalties, police said.
Police are urging residents to be vigilant and not provide any personal or account information, or send any money or checks to these individuals.
