The Hopewell Valley League of Women Voters, which is celebrating 52 years of service to the community and 95 years nationally, is asking local friends for financial support during its annual fund drive. "This finance drive is our primary fundraiser," said Finance Chairwoman Peg Goertz.
"Gifts from this drive provide the operating funds that allow us to sponsor educational programs throughout the year and offer voter services."
This year the League has actively engaged residents of the area to encourage their participation in government at all levels. In the fall, the League made a special effort to gather and share information on all the ballot questions.
Members registered voters, updated voter education materials, and distributed cards with key information about the General Election.
In October, League members hosted a Candidates Forum for the residents who ran for two seats on the Hopewell Township Committee – the only contested municipal election. Members continue to work on the format for the forums, seeking to make them as fresh and informative as possible. Suggestions for improvements and collection of questions are always welcome from the community, said President Joann Held.
Every June the League sponsors a Community Service Award and presents a scholarship to a local high school student.
Much of the funding for this award comes from this annual finance drive.
In an ongoing effort to involve the community in its many activities, League members welcome suggestions for a nonpartisan speaker or topic which it can sponsor on relevant and timely community issues.
Suggestions can be sent to the League’s email address – [email protected].
This past year the League has continued to refine its online presence at HopewellValleyLWV.org to better communicate with local neighbors.
Residents are encouraged to check the web site for voter information and other community information.
"These programs, which we are privileged to sponsor for our community, need financial support as well as the time and energy of our members," said Ms. Held.
"We are always very grateful for the generous contributions from members and friends."
Checks should be made payable to LWVHV and mailed to LWVHV, P.O. Box 82, Pennington, 08534.
