By Jim Gardner
WEST WINDSOR – A social media campaign promoting Mercer County Community College (MCCC) alumnus and Trenton native Jesse Herrera’s cross-country bicycle trip to raise funds for the college’s Trenton Campus resulted in a top award for the MCCC Marketing and Communications team, which brought home seven awards in the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District 1 competition.
During the NCMPR awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., community colleges from throughout the Northeast U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom were represented in the competition. Mercer was awarded two gold, three silver, and two bronze medallions.
A gold medallion was awarded in recognition of MCCC’s social media campaign in support of Herrera’s cross-country bicycle trip to raise funds for the college’s Trenton Campus. His 3,400-mile, 12-state trek, dubbed “Herrera Across America/Miles for Mercer,” raised more than $2,000. The 55-day journey generated 233 tweets and 127 Instagram posts, and picked up 588 and 114 new followers on Instagram and Twitter, respectively.
In addition, the “Herrera Across America” campaign was awarded a bronze medallion for Communications Success Story. Other awards include:
Gold: Electronic Media for the online version of The Viking magazine.
Silver: Quakerbridge Mall displays; academic catalog; Camp College catalog.
Bronze: Social Media Contest for “Appear in Mercer Gear” Pinterest contest.
The National Council for Marketing & Public Relations is the only organization of its kind that exclusively represents marketing and public relations professionals at community and technical colleges. As one of the fastest-growing affiliates of the American Association of Community Colleges, NCMPR has more than 1,550 members from more than 650 colleges across the United States, Canada and other countries.
