MANSFIELD — The suspected criminal in a gas station robbery led police on a pursuit that ended in a car crash before he was apprehended the night of Nov. 15.
Keith Downs, of Edgewater Park, allegedly approached a gas attendant at the Gulf Gas Station at 3146 Route 206 and asked for assistance with his motor vehicle before physically assaulting and stealing the attendant’s cash, according to Mansfield police.
Mr. Downs reportedly fled in a dark-colored Pontiac onto Route 206 North. Shortly after the incident, Bordentown Township police located the suspected vehicle, and Mr. Downs led police on a pursuit that ended in a motor vehicle crash on Route 130 at Kinkora Road, according to police.
After the crash, Mr. Downs reportedly fled the scene on foot, but later was apprehended after physically resisting the efforts of police to place him in custody, according to police.
The driver of the other motor vehicle that was struck by the Pontiac refused medical treatment, police said.
Mr. Downs was transported to Virtua Hospital in Mt. Holly where he was treated and released for his injuries, according to police.
Police charged Mr. Downs with robbery, assault, theft, eluding police, obstruction and resisting arrest. He was taken to the Burlington County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail.
