LAMBERTVILLE: Mayor pleads ‘not guilty’ to DWI charge

By Gene Robbins, Managing Editor
Lambertville Mayor David M. DelVecchio has entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence at 1:07 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in Burlington County.
His first court appearance was scheduled for today, Thursday, at 8:30 a.m., for a status conference for all parties to review the sharing of evidence, said Court Administrator Colleen Guarrera. A trial date has not been scheduled, she said.
Mansfield Township police stopped his vehicle on Route 130. On-scene investigation revealed Mr. DelVecchio had consumed some amount of alcoholic beverages prior to driving, police said.
After failing to complete the series of sobriety tests, police said, Mr. DelVecchio, 58, was taken into custody, taken to police headquarters and charged with DWI, reckless driving and failing to maintain lane.
After processing, Mr. DelVecchio was released to a third party, pending his court appearance.
Lambertville attorney Philip Faherty, who is representing Mr. DelVecchio, said Tuesday that his client took two Alcotests and registered a 0.0 reading on both. The charges are based on the officer’s observations, he said.
Mr. Faherty said Mr. DelVecchio was told he was going 12 mph over the speed limit and going out of his lane of travel. No ticket was written for speeding.
He said today’s court appearance would be like a pretrial conference where the parties would review evidence and decide to go to trial or attempt to solve the charges in some other way.
