By John Kocubinski, of North Hanover Township
On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, under blue skies, Gov. Chris Christie, U.S. Congressman Jon Runyan and Brigadier General, the Adjutant General Michael Cunniff, coupled with former and current soldiers, airman, sailors, marines and guardsmen, gathered at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle veterans memorial cemetery in North Hanover Township, honoring military heroes.
These are the heroes who fought for freedom and did without a lot of the everyday conveniences when they’re in the service and endured many sacrifices.
Since North Hanover’s mayor, William Quackenboss, nor any of the four Township Committee members did not attend this ceremony, a veteran’s sacrifice is probably not fully appreciated by people who haven’t been in the service.
As a veteran and a former North Hanover Township committeeman/mayor, I’ve been coming to this ceremony for many years as we mourn our family veterans, and it really hits home.
I believe that the township’s mayor and committee members owe the many North Hanover Township veterans an apology for not saluting them with high praise at this Veterans Day service.
I also appreciate Albert Bucchi, director of Veterans Services, and Raymond Zawachi, deputy of commissions of Veterans Affairs, for organizing this memorial.
