A tradition that has lasted 40 years is in full swing once again as the Community Christian Choir continues its annual concert series with a focus on the “Miracle of Peace.”
The choir includes more than 80 children and 30 adult singers from many Christian denominations, representing more than 45 churches throughout central New Jersey.
Although the choir is Christian in nature, an individual’s church affiliation is not a requirement for membership in the choir.
This year’s concert series kicked off on Nov. 30 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Robbinsville, with the choir performing Christmas songs.
According to choir director Patricia K. Weitz, the concert series is a celebration of the choir’s past 20 years of Christmas programs.
The theme of the series, the “Miracle of Peace,” commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Truce, which occurred during World War I when German and British soldiers came out of their trenches to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together, despite their differences.
“We want to remind everyone of the miracle of peace that was given to us long ago,” Weitz said.
There is no admission to the choir’s concerts. A free will offering for a specific charity is requested.
Over the years, Weitz said, the choir has raised more than $205,000 for different charities.
This year’s charities have been Woman- Space, One Simple Wish, One Life to Love and the Missionary Childhood Association and St. Charles Borromeo Holy Name Society.
The choir’s final show of the season will be performed at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 at Villa Victoria Academy, 376 W. Upper Ferry Road, Ewing Township. The benefiting charity will be the Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, which helps the homebound elderly.
“It’s Christmastime and we want to help everyone get into the reason for the season,” Weitz said.
