Millstone Township has received a grant in the amount of $250,000 for the first phase of a major park development plan at Millstone Park, Red Valley Road.
The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders recently approved the allocation of $2 million from the county’s open space trust fund to make improvements to parks throughout the county.
The work at Millstone Park is expected to include six irrigated fields, a 2,250- square-foot restroom facility-snack barshelter building, two tot lots, a boat launch, two fishing piers, parking for 268 cars and related storm water management and park amenities.
The Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant program helps to improve and develop park facilities and fund the acquisition of park property, according to a press release.
All 53 municipalities were eligible to apply for a grant, according to Paul Gleitz, principal park planner for the Monmouth County Park System.
“The program is a competitive matching funds program, and the maximum matching amount awarded to a municipality for a particular project is $250,000,” Gleitz said.
Freeholder Director Lillian Burry, who serves as a liaison to the park system, said the grants show the commitment the county has to open space preservation.
“The municipal open space grant program furthers the county’s land preservation for parks, recreation, open space and farmland,” Burry said.
The municipality will have a little more than two years to complete the projects, according to Gleitz.
Applications for the 2015 Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant Program will be available on or about May 1, according to the press release. The filing deadline will be in September.
