ALLENTOWN — The Allentown Lions Club is a vibrant and growing group that has just completed its 75th anniversary, according to a press release.
The Lions are part of Lions International, the world’s largest service organization, whose mission it is to empower volunteers to serve their communities by providing humanitarian support and performing service projects.
In the past, the Allentown Lions Club has helped fund the construction of playground equipment at Byron Johnson Park, performed eye tests at local preschools and the Newell Elementary School, organized and directed the annual Memorial Day parade and Easter egg hunt, and collected eyeglasses for recycling, according to the press release.
For the last several years, the Lions have sponsored the Allentown High School Leo Club, which is also part of Lions International; the program is designed to give youth an opportunity to volunteer in their community.
The Allentown Lions Club sponsors community events such as the White Cane Days, an art auction at the German-American Club and the introduction of the craft beer garden at the Fall Harvest Fest, all of which have helped meet the funding the club needs to support the community, according to the press release.
Club President Brian Williams said, “the craft beer event was a great success, and drew many more folks to the Harvest Fest who would not have come. It is a win for the community as well as a win for the fundraising efforts of the club.”
The funds the Lions raise are used to support the Memorial Day parade, scholarships for all levels of the school system, Boys State/Girls State sponsorships, Leo Club sponsorship, Boy Scout projects, the Easter egg hunt, and the purchase of eyeglasses and medical equipment for those in need in the community.
The club recently honored Kurt Bolz II for his dedicated service to the community, according to the press release.
The club will host an art auction at the German-American Club on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Club member Rob Schmitt said the response from the community has been wonderful, and many people have been looking forward the event.
The cost to attend the event is $20 and includes beer, wine, hors d’ oeuvres and dessert. For more information about the art auction or the Lions Club, visit the website allentownlions.com or call Doug Both at 609-915-6932.
