– American Legion sets fundraiser for family

American Legion Post 25, 4 JFK Blvd., Milltown, will hold a fundraiser at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 for a family who lost everything in a local house fire.

The suggested donation is $20 at the door. The event includes food, beer, wine and entertainment by a live band. All proceeds will go directly to the family.

– Valentine’s gala on tap at Elks lodge

East Brunswick Elks Lodge No. 2370 will hold a Valentine’s Day party with a Mardi Gras theme 7-11 p.m. Feb. 14 at the lodge, 26 Oakmont Ave. Snow date will be Feb. 21.

The event will feature music by the Noisy Neighbors, a New Orleans-style band. Guests may bring their own snacks. Food will be available for purchase. Cost is $15 per person.

– Youngsters invited to Pioneer Day at library

The Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St., will sponsor its Pioneer Day 11 a.m. Feb. 7.

Youngsters ages 6-10, who will learn what it was like to live in the days of log cabins and covered wagons, will make butter, pioneer toys and more. Participants are invited to come dressed in 19th-century costumes.

– Auxiliary to sponsor painting fundraiser

The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 133 will host its Wine and Design of Milltown: Painting a Colorful Picture of Birdhouses fundraising event 6:30-10 p.m. Feb. 6 at the post home, 485 Cranbury Road, behind University Radiology, East Brunswick.

Tickets for the evening of painting cost $40 in advance, $45 at the door; price includes light snacks and drinks.

– Wine, cheese benefit will support band trip

The Old Bridge Marching Knights Band Parents Association will sponsor its Wine and Cheese Event 7-11 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Old Bridge Recreation Building, 1 Old Bridge Plaza, in the municipal complex, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will support the band’s upcoming trip to play at the D-Day Remembrance Celebration set for June in Normandy, France.

Tickets cost $40 per person and include a buffet dinner and a commemorative wine glass. Individuals must be age 21 or above to attend.

– AARP sponsoring March trip to Florida

Old Bridge AARP Chapter No. 4854 will offer a seven-day, six-night bus trip to Amelia Island, St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Fla., March 15-21.

Cost is $600 per person. The trip will include motor-coach transportation; hotel accommodations; 10 meals; a visit to the Fountain of Youth; a narrated cruise on the St. Johns River; guided tours of Amelia Island, St. Augustine and Jacksonville; and more.

– Author to discuss New Jersey diners

The Old Bridge Public Library, Route 516 and Cottrell Road, will present a program titled “A History of Diners in New Jersey” 2 p.m. Feb. 7.

Guest speaker will be author and journalist Michael C. Gabriele. Admission is free of charge. The public is invited.

– Tickets on sale for Feb. 6 Italian Night

The St. Ambrose Improvement Committee will host its Italian Night 7-11 p.m. Feb. 6 in the St. Ambrose Café at the church, Throckmorton Lane, Old Bridge. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will dance to Italian music provided by a DJ. The dinner menu will include Italian bruschetta, spaghetti and meatballs, spaghetti aglio e olio, sausage and peppers, salad, garlic bread, water, coffee, tea and dessert.

Cost is $35 per person. All proceeds will benefit the St. Ambrose Parish and School Improvement Fund.

– Essay contest celebrates George Washington

The Old Barracks Museum in Trenton invites fourth- and fifth-grade students to celebrate George Washington’s birthday through an essay contest.

Participants must answer the following question: If George Washington could visit America in 2015, what do you think he would be most proud of in our country today?

All entries must be received by mail by February 6. The winning essays will be chosen based on content, style, originality and grammar.

Two lucky winners from each grade will be invited to meet Washington and share his birthday cake. Winners and their immediate families will also be given complimentary tours of the museum.

Winners will be notified by phone and/or mail by Feb. 11.
