More than 15 vehicles pile-up

CRANBURY – At least one person is dead and possibly dozens injured following a multi-vehicle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike Monday night, according to State Police.
Police said the crash took place at 9:11 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike at milepost 71.3 and involved more than 15 vehicles.
The vehicles involved included four tractor-trailers, two box trucks, a fully loaded bus and “multiple cars.”
State Troopers were on the scene investigating the crash, which closed the southbound lanes of the major artery.
The accident took place as freezing rain and sleet fell across the region Monday night, but police could not say yet if icy conditions were a factor in the crash.
Police also could not give the number of people hurt, or the extent of the injuries as of Monday night except to say that there were “many” injured.
While state police could not yet give a cause for the crash, Cranbury Police put out an alert warning residents of icy conditions.
“Freezing rain has caused extremely hazardous travel conditions in and around our area,” Cranbury Police said in a Nixle alert to residents. “Avoid unnecesary travel at this time.”
That alert also advised residents that the crash would likely impact driving conditions through the morning commute.
We will update the story as more information becomes available.
