SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Event gives free prom dresses plus

By Azra Baig, Special Writer
The South Brunswick Viking Closet held its fourth annual, “Sisterhood of the Traveling Prom Dress” event on Feb. 7 at South Brunswick High School.
With prom season just a few months away, it was a great opportunity for all South Brunswick High School girls to shop for prom dresses, jewelry, purses, shoes and much more for absolutely no cost due to the generosity from many individuals and businesses.
Shannon Martin, a senior SBHS student and president of the Viking Closet described the event.
“Ms. (Jennifer) Webb, the advisor of the Viking Closet, got the idea from the movie, ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,’ because we collect new and used dresses and so basically these prom dresses are traveling,” She said. “Some traveled even to Ecuador after the event last year.”
She said that more than 300 Prom dresses were donated for the event.
Unique to this year, Shannon Martin said, the Viking Closet was happy to invite girls from other communities that could benefit from this event.
“This was the first year we welcomed other communities. Junior and Senior students from North Brunswick High School and New Brunswick High School were invited,” She said.
She also said the event was expanded to a larger space in the high school, the Red Cafeteria, to accommodate its growth.
Besides the free prom dresses and accessories, the event had hairstylists giving free updos and cosmetic representatives providing free makeovers.
There were also free raffles for two Senior Prom tickets and one Junior Prom ticket, a free North Face jacket and free manicure and pedicure gift certificates.
Shaunna Taylor, age 16, attended the event from North Brunswick to look for a prom dress.
She was very excited to find a dress.
“I really like it.” she said. “It was pretty amazing to see different dresses and pick them out and to try them on, it was pretty cool.”
After picking out her dress she planned to get some makeover tips and find some accessories to match her prom dress.
“I think the Prom Dress Event was very successful. It was set up nicely and elegant,” Jada-Ray Poku, age 17, a senior at SBHS said.
Jennifer Webb, the Viking Closet Advisor, was thankful for everyone’s generosity and to all who made the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Prom Dress” event possible.
She thanked all the donors, the SBHS students who volunteered and their parents, the SBHS staff and administrators, the friends and family of the Viking Closet, the greater South Brunswick Community and all the Sponsors.
Sponsors of the event included, KiKi D’s, Christine’s Hope For Kids Foundation, Nextage Realty Group, Krispy Krust, Alfonso’s, Chartwells, Party Fair, Dunkin Donuts, Master Tax, Stop & Shop, Regency Cleaners & Taylors, Dusal’s Italian Restaurant and Pizza, Four Musketeers Pizzeria, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kura Salon & Spa, BlackRock, Dollar Tree, Mary Kay Consultant Dorie Knott, Rasoi III, and The Potting Shed.
