Republicans announce ticket for local government
Deputy Mayor Greg Burchette and Township Committeeman Carl Suraci were nominated unopposed and endorsed unanimously to carry the Republican Party banner in the June primary by the local Republican county committee and club on March 3.
About 40 Hillsborough Republicans braved a snow and ice storm for the screening for Township Committee candidates and the monthly meeting of the township Republican Club. Elected officials from state, county and local levels also attended.
Hillsborough Democrats have yet to announce their endorsed candidates.
Mr. Burchette is generally acknowledged to be the spearhead behind the Shop Hillsborough property tax rebate card, a rewards program for shopping locally in which money will be deducted from property tax bills.
“Our business-like approach to government has garnered us much success, and has paid dividends with great programs like Shop Hillsborough, which is the number-one program of its kind in the state,” said Mr. Burchette, who is seeking his second three-year term.
Mr. Suraci, who will be running for a fifth three-year term, is chairman of the governing body’s finance committee.
“Year after year the Republican Township Committee has delivered on our electoral promises,” said Mr. Carl Suraci. “As a result, we spend the least amount per capita in south Somerset County, and have been rewarded with a AA+ bond rating from Standard & Poor’s.”
“It’s great to see so many Hillsborough Republicans, especially with the bad weather tonight,” remarked Club President Fred Gladstone. “The dedication of our club members always shows, and translates to our yearly success during the elections.”Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, Freeholder Director Mark Caliguire and Mayor Doug Tomson all gave updates about projects at their respective levels of government. Topics discussed included the state’s pension system and transportation trust fund, the county’s investment in parks and other infrastructure projects, and the status of the township budget, parks and road projects.
