FLORENCE: Students to stage ‘High School Musical’

By Amy Batista, Special Writer
FLORENCE — High school students are ready to showcase Disney’s “High School Musical.”
Tickets will be on sale at the door at $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens for performances March 12, 13 and 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the Florence Township High School.
”The show was originally scheduled for March 5, 6 and 7,” said Ashley Ayrer, director and French teacher.
The show was postponed due to the weather.
”Any tickets purchased in advance will be accepted for the corresponding evening Thursday, Friday or Saturday,” she said.
Doors will open at 6:15 p.m.
”With its diverse cast of characters and upbeat musical numbers, Disney’s ‘High School Musical’ is fun for the whole family,” she said. “If you raised a kid or were a kid in the 2000s, you’re in for a nostalgic evening.”
She said the show is about 140 minutes, including intermission.
The main characters are Gabriella Montez, played by senior Gabriella Hollendonner; Sharpay Evans, played by senior Marissa LeBlanc; Ryan Evans, played by freshman James Chianese and understudy junior Taylor Reeder; coach Bolton, played by senior Christopher Childs; and Ms. Darbus, played by senior Emily Campbell.
Based on the successful Disney movie, “High School Musical” is the story of what happens when the captain of the basketball team and the high-achieving science genius shake things up by auditioning for the school musical.
The new couple must try to make it to callback auditions despite their existing commitments to basketball and science league, not to mention the school’s conniving theater stars. Everything gets turned upside down as the cliques of East High start messing with the status quo.
”It was very important to me this year to find a show that could feature our many talented actors, singers and dancers,” she said. “ ‘High School Musical’ has a wide range of characters and it is extremely appealing to the community because of its popularity in the 2000s.”
She said the students love it, and their enthusiasm is contagious.
Under the direction of Ms. Ayrer, the show features a cast and crew of about 78 cast members, orchestra members and various crew.
At the performances, 50-50 raffles will be available.
