Local senior citizen wins ugly sweater contest

Christine Savoca of Middletown was the winner of We Care Adult Care’s ugliest sweater contest.

“We’ve had a great time this month adding tinsel, bells and anything else we could think of to make the ugliest sweater,” said Debbie McCarthy, activities director at We Care Adult Care, in a press release. “At a spry 104 years old, Christina is our oldest member, and she was ecstatic when our senior judges announced that she was our winner.”

When asked what the secret to a long life is, Savoca answered, “Staying active, and everything in moderation,” according to the press release.

Seniors at the facility have a broad scope of ability, from being wheelchair-bound to almost fully functioning.

“Everything we do, including making ugly sweaters, has a therapeutic purpose — even if they don’t necessarily feel it,” Mc- Carthy said.
