Police charge South River man in burglary of borough residence

SOUTH RIVER — A borough man has been charged after allegedly burglarizing a home on Gordon Street.

Officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress around 12:09 a.m. March 8, according to the South River Police Department.

The resident reportedly told responding police officers that she observed the suspect standing in her basement. She said the suspect fled after being seen.

Two other witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect and the clothing he was wearing, police said.

Patrolman Mario Pinto allegedly observed a male matching the description of the suspect in the area of Main and Ferry streets. Upon further investigation, the suspect was identified as Enrique Bernal, 26, of South River, police said.

Bernal was charged with burglary and was held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $20,000 bail.
