Grant to improve pedestrian safety

EDISON — The township will use a nearly half-million-dollar grant to make pedestrian improvements near the train station, according to officials.

“This grant has come at an opportune time. Edison is working hard to save tax dollars, but also moving forward with necessary infrastructure improvements,” Mayor Thomas Lankey said. “Our train station is a major transportation hub. This grant will help us improve safety for the growing number of commuters who use it each day.”

The improvements will take place along Plainfield Avenue near the NJ Transit station.

The $450,000 grant from the N.J. Department of Transportation (DOT) was the largest of three awarded to Middlesex County municipalities. Metuchen received $192,000, which will also be dedicated to making streets safer for pedestrians, and Highland Park received $69,000 for the Safe Routes to School program.

The grants are part of the DOT’s Local Aid Infrastructure program.
