– Event to support mentoring programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC) will hold its 16th annual Gourmet Food and Wine Tasting from 6:30-9 p.m. May 7 at Buona Sera, 50 Maple Ave., Red Bank.

Proceeds will be used to sustain and expand BBBSMMC’s mentoring programs for children.

The event will feature hors d’oeuvres, a raw bar, pasta and specialty stations and desserts. There will also be silent and chance auctions.

– ‘Chords and Canines’ a cappella concert set

The Chorus of the Atlantic will present its annual spring show, “Chords and Canines,” at 2 p.m. May 2 at Ocean Township High School, 550 W. Park Ave., Oakhurst.

This year’s program will celebrate a cappella singing with the quartet, Frank the Dog, and the Matinee Idles chorus.

Frank the Dog was the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2013 Mid-Atlantic District Champion and an International Barbershop Harmony Society competitor.

– Scholarship deadline is May 4

The Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce (EMACC) is offering educational foundation scholarships to nontraditional students. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. May 4 at the Chamber’s office at 8 Reckless Place, Red Bank.

Awards of $1,250 each will be made based on three categories: Students age 25 and up who are returning to school; college students entering their junior or senior year who have already completed 60 credits; and students pursuing post-high school vocational or technical training. Scholarship awards will be distributed in June.

Eligible applicants must live or work within the service area of the Chamber, including Eatontown, Fair Haven, Fort Monmouth, Little Silver, Monmouth Beach, Oceanport, Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright, Shrewsbury and Tinton Falls, or be employed by a Chamber member, regardless of location. The applicant does not have to be a member of EMACC, but must provide a recommendation by an EMACC member in good standing who is not a family member.

– Red Bank set to host yard sale May 2

RED BANK — The Friends of the Red Bank Public Library are sponsoring the eighth annual Red Bank Townwide Yard Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.

All proceeds from yard sale registrations will benefit the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library.

Treasure hunters can spend the morning searching for bargains and then wander downtown for lunch. Each year, over 100 households participate.

Addresses of participating homes will be made available online and in paper form May 1.

– Journalist to speak about Middle East

Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) will host Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist, Bret Stephens, at 11 a.m. May 3 at 171 Ridge Road, Rumson. He will speak about Israel and Iran and global Jihad.

Stephens is a foreign-affairs columnist and deputy editorial page editor for the Wall Street Journal. Following the lecture, he will answer questions and sign his new book, “America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder.” Books will be available for purchase.

 The cost to attend the lecture is $5, but free for members of CBI and the Red Bank Chapter of Hadassah. Seating is limited, so advance registration is requested by visiting www.cbirumson.org.

– Audubon Society slates May bird walks

The Monmouth County Audubon Society will lead a bird walk at Allaire State Park in Wall on May 2 and another at the Sandy Hook unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area park on May 3. The walks will provide an opportunity to view a variety of birds during the migration season.

Participants of the Allaire State Park bird walk should meet at 8:15 a.m. at the main parking lot by the historic village, which is located inside the park at 4265 Atlantic Ave. The walk will end by noon.

Participants of the Sandy Hook bird walk should meet at 7:45 a.m. at the parking lot of the now-closed Visitor Center at 128 S. Hartshorne Drive, Highlands.

Allaire State Park and Sandy Hook are what birders refer to as a “migrant trap,” a natural oasis of undisturbed habitat surrounded by suburbs. Birds passing through both areas are drawn to the plentiful food and native plant cover.

The free trips are open to both members and non-members of the Monmouth County Audubon Society. Advance registration is not required. Participants should bring binoculars and field guides and dress appropriately for the weather. The walks will take place light rain or shine. If the weather is questionable, participants can check for updates at www.monmouthaudubon.org. Pets are not permitted.

The Monmouth County Audubon Society, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is dedicated to the enjoyment and study of nature, wildlife conservation, habitat protection and education. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month, from September through May, at the Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Road, Fair Haven.

– Racetrack to host annual derby May 2

OCEANPORT — The Monmouth Park Charity Fund will sponsor the 12th annual Kentucky Derby Celebration from 3-6:30 p.m. May 2 at Monmouth Park Racetrack, 175 Oceanport Ave., Oceanport.

Proceeds will benefit nonprofit agencies throughout Monmouth County.

The celebration will honor Investors Bank, Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin for their philanthropic vision and commitment to helping those in need.

The Fisher House Foundation will also be recognized for its dedication in providing comfort and support to military service personnel, veterans and their families.

The event will feature simulcast wagering throughout the afternoon, an open bar, buffet, live and silent auctions and the traditional male and female hat and attire contest.

– Fundraiser walk slated for May 2

The Family Resource Network (FRN) will hold its 11th annual Walk for a Brighter Tomorrow at 11 a.m. May 2 at the intersection of Stockton and Ocean avenues at the Seaside Park boardwalk.

Proceeds will support FRN’s programs and services benefiting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Registration begins 10 a.m. After crossing the finish line, walkers are invited to attend Family Fun Day, which will include free activities, such as music, dancing, games and face painting, for all registered attendees.

– Networking event set in Sea Bright

The Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce (EMACC) will hold a Burgers, Brews and Networking event from 5:30-8 p.m. April 30 at Dive Coastal Bar and Food Joint, 1072 Ocean Ave., Sea Bright.

The networking schedule for the upcoming summer season will be presented at this event, which will feature a varied menu and cash bar.

EMACC’s networking events are designed to encourage real-time relationship building with people in diverse business categories. Future networking opportunities will be scheduled at various venues in Long Branch and Highlands.

– Quaker meetinghouse to be open for tours

The Shrewsbury Meetinghouse on Route 35 in Shrewsbury will be open for tours May 2 and 3 as part of the Weekend in Old Monmouth historic sites event, which has been organized by the Monmouth County Historical Commission.

The Quaker meetinghouse will be open from 10 a.m. -5 p.m. May 2 and 12-5 p.m. May 3 and include exhibits, guided tours and historic presentations throughout the day.

The current meetinghouse was constructed in 1816. In 1940, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
