Rain only delayed the inevitable at the Monmouth County Golf Tournament. Scheduled for April 20 at the Charleston Springs Golf Club in Millstone Township, the tournament was pushed back a day due to rain. The extra day hardly mattered to Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) golfers, who finished 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Manasquan High School, 300-310.
The Colts’ win was forged at the top of the leader board with Chris Gotterup winning the individual championship with a 2-underpar round of 70 and his teammate, Sean Farren, finishing second with a 1-under 71.
A third Colt, Jack Doherty, finished in a three-way tie for third with defending champion Dawson Jones of Howell High School and Kellen Jordan of St. Rose High School after all carded 73s.
CBA’s fourth scorer was Brenden Clark, who shot an 86.
Gotterup tore up the front nine with a 3- under 33. He played the back nine in 1-over 37. Farren was 1-under on the back nine, carding 35 on three birdies and two bogies. He played the front nine in even-par 36.
Completing the individual top 10 were Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s Reid Bedell, Manasquan High School’s Logan Sabins and Wall High School’s Andrew Hatch, who tied for sixth (74); Freehold Township High School’s Bobby Weise, ninth (75); and Rumson-Fair Haven’s Jack Luby and Wall’s Luke Dougherty, who tied for 10th (76).
The cutoff score to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament, which was scheduled for April 28 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood, was 83.
Those golfers who qualified for the individual Shore Conference Tournament championship include Red Bank Catholic High School’s Pat Leitrkinder (77), Rumson Fair Haven’s Perry Litwin (79), Red Bank Catholic’s Lenny Coviello (81), St. John Vianney High School’s Rob Durski (81), Ranney School’s Austin Dobrzynski (81) and Ocean Township High School’s Joe Poznak (82), John Lee (82) and Simon Lee (83).
The top eight teams at the county tournament also advanced to the team competition at the conference tournament. Rumson-Fair Haven (315), Red Bank Catholic (331) and Ocean Township (333) all qualified.
Scoring for Rumson-Fair Haven, which tied Howell High School for fourth, were Bedell, Luby, Litwin and Travis Weiner (86).
Red Bank Catholic’s top scorers were Leitrkinder, Coviello, Dan Kopp (85) and Nick Anderson (88).
