Ocean Township residents will have a once-in-every-four-year chance to choose their five-person municipal council on Tuesday, May 12.
Only 95 years after women fought and won the right to vote, and wars fought to defend democracy, voting trends have plummeted to only 10 percent participation in our last council election. The saying that “all politics is local” refers to the issues that most closely affect our daily lives. Now is the time to question candidates and consider their positions in order to cast an informed vote.
One way residents can become informed is through debates, such as the one being held by the League of Women Voters on Wednesday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Board of Education building at 163 Monmouth Road.
The candidates deserve to have their points of view heard, and we should consider the wisdom of their answers. Then, vote on May 12. Let your children know that voting is a right and privilege that our democracy bestows on us, denied to so may around the world.
Vote! Because we can, we should.
