Walter Ingram and John Soucheck used identical scripts to score decisive victories in the 50th annual Captain Ronald Zinn Memorial Races at the Wall Township Recreation Complex April 18.
Both raced out to early leads in the traditional event that again honored Zinn, the twotime USA Olympian and West Point graduate who lost his life in Vietnam combat in 1965, as well as all Vietnam veterans.
Ingram, 22, a Somerville resident, physics teacher at Hunterdon Central High School and former track and cross-country standout at The College of New Jersey, sped off with the Zinn 5K Run title in 16:30.0.
The co-featured Zinn 10K Racewalk went to Soucheck, 49, a Little Silver resident who captains the national-champion Shore Athletic Club racewalk team. He walked the 10K route (which is 6.2 miles) in 56:12.
Ingram went two laps around the 2.5-kilometer Wall Recreation Complex course, while Soucheck covered four laps.
Women’s winners were runner Annalise Giuliano of Jackson (23:54) and walker Jessica DeMarco of Barnegat (1:30:08.)
Victoria Loehle, a sophomore at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) was one of 54 WPI spring student-athletes across five varsity sports to garner NEWMAC Academic All- Conference status.
Loehle is a member of WPI’s women’s rowing team, which recently finished third at the NEWMAC Championships. She is a graduate of Freehold High School and lives in Morganville.
The Manalapan-Englishtown Community Alliance to prevent alcoholism and drug abuse held a 5K Fun Run and fundraiser on the Manalapan Recreation Center’s Running Trail on April 25.
Luke Fischer was the overall winner (18:48.5), finishing just ahead of Kristin Andrews (18:53.4)
Rounding out the top 10 were Zach Zawatski (19:01.0), Marlana Hodgins (22:33.8), Steve Hodgins (22:24.7), Nolan Rynecki (23:11.5), Cameron Evans (24:03.6), Bridget Kean (24:32.5), Adam Wohlstelter (24:46.7) and Srini Duggineni (25:17.5).
Dave Richardson, the Manalapan Township Health Officer, directed the event, which was attended by Township Mayor and honorary race starter Jack McNaboe and Township Committee members Susan Cohen, Ryan Green and Jordan Maskowitz. Also supporting the event were Manalapan High School Principal Adam Angelozzi, Supervisor of Extracurricular Activities John Hein and honor students and track team members.
The 6th annual Race to Educate will be held at Howell Middle School South, located at 230 Ramtown-Greenville Road in Howell, on May 16.
