– Breakfast event benefits food bank

– Dinner will aid fallen soldier’s family

East Brunswick Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 133 will host its fundraising Roast Beef Dinner 1-6 p.m. June 7 at the post home, 485 Cranbury Road. Proceeds will support the Flynns, the family of a fallen Marine. Cost is $10 and includes dinner, coffee and cake. For information, call 732-254-9674.

– Tim Howard to kick off Tourette campaign

International soccer superstar Tim Howard will kick off a yearlong Tourette syndrome awareness campaign on June 4 at Rutgers University’s soccer stadium on Busch campus. Howard, who originates from North Brunswick, will speak about soccer, the World Cup and life with Tourette syndrome. Children under age 17 can register for a soccer clinic with the Rutgers University men’s soccer team at 3 p.m. Howard will speak around 4:15 p.m. Attendees should arrive at the stadium by 2:30 p.m. with their preprinted registration tickets. A donation of $10 per person is required to attend. Proceeds benefit the Tim Howard Leadership Academy, a part of the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders. – Park to reopen butterfly house

The grand opening for the butterfly house inside Davidson’s Mill Pond Park will be 10 a.m. to noon on June 6. The house will be open to the public 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday and Sunday in June, July and August thereafter. The “hoop house” is filled with plants that feed and shelter butterflies and larvae native to New Jersey. – Meditation workshops to be offered at library

The North Brunswick Library will offer workshops on mindfulness meditation for adults 7-8 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 13 at the library, 880 Hermann Road, North Brunswick. Mindfulness meditation, drawn from a 2,500-year-old Buddhist tradition, is a secular practice designed to cultivate awareness of experiences. Dr. Siobhan Gibbons, a psychologist with six years of experience teaching stress management and mindfulness-based stress-reduction workshops, will lead the sessions. – Second graders to read about their favorite seniors

The South Brunswick Senior Center will hold the “Senior That I Love” essay contest awards recognition ceremony at 12:30 p.m. June 8. Second grade students will be honored at the Senior Center, 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction, for their heartwarming stories about an older adult who has left a lasting impression on them. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges from the Senior Center and receive awards at this ceremony. The event is open to South Brunswick residents age 55 and older. – Volunteers needed to clear trailway

The Kingston Greenways Association will celebrate Trails Day on June 6 by opening up a trail in the Cook Natural Area. This will be an alternate trail on a drier path to replace the trail that was formerly the site of the boardwalk. Volunteers should meet at 2 p.m. at the Cook parking lot at the intersection of Ridge and Heathcote Roads in Kingston. Wear boots. Gloves and tools will be supplied. – Open-bounce event to support mission trip

The Jumping Jungle, 10 Alvin Court, Suite 100, East Brunswick, will host an open-bounce fundraiser 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 12. Proceeds will benefit Danielle Hauer, a Jumping Jungle employee who has been chosen as a Presbyterian Mission Agency YAV (Young Adult Volunteer) and will be leaving for Little Rock, Ark., in August for a yearlong mission trip to help with the ecosystem and/or disaster relief. Cost for children ages 2-18 is $10 for two hours of bouncing or $13 for one hour, 15 minutes, of bouncing and two slices of pizza. Cost for adults is $5 for up to four slices of pizza. All pizza options will come with unlimited beverages. Individuals under age 2 and above age 18 will bounce for free. Socks must be worn. – Workshop to focus on raising chickens

The Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will hold the workshop, “Raising Chickens in Your Backyard,” 6-9 p.m. June 10 at the EARTH Center in Davidsons Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. The free workshop will be hosted by Dr. Joseph Heckman, who has been raising chickens on a pasture since 2005. He will discuss baby chicks, coops, feeder systems, sourcing feed, protection from predators, and the collection and care of eggs. On display will be a small flock of chickens in a movable coop. Preregistration is required in advance by calling 732-398-5262 by June 5. Not all municipalities allow chicken rearing on residential lots. Any township resident age 55 and older who is caring for a spouse, partner or parent is invited to join the Caregivers Support Group, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. June 4 and 18 at the South Brunswick Office on Aging, 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction.
