HILLSBOROUGH: Vice principal chosen for middle school

Math teacher Debra Porowski has been appointed by the Board of Education as vice principal of Hillsborough Middle School, effective Sept. 1.
Ms. Porowski has spent her entire 22-year teaching career at Hillsborough Middle School. She began as a math teacher in township public schools upon graduation from The College of New Jersey in 1993 and has taught basic skills through honors math to sixth through eighth grade students. In addition to classroom duties, for the past 14 years she has also served as the math content specialist at HMS. In 2004, she was honored as the school’s Teacher of the Year.
During the 2012-13 school year, one of Ms. Porowski’s Algebra I classes was chosen as a pilot classroom for the district’s 1:1 technology initiative, which saw its final step this school year with every student in grades 5-12 being provided a district-issued Chromebook.
Ms. Porowski has been a resident of Hillsborough Township for the last 17 years and her two sons attend Hillsborough schools.
“I am both proud and honored to be chosen as the next vice principal of the Hillsborough Middle School. I love my school, the students, and the teachers. I am excited to work with the staff in this new role,” said Ms. Porowski. “I enjoy coming to work every day, and I want every teacher and every student to walk the hallways of HMS feeling like an important and valued member of our community, and to feel excited about the learning that is happening here every day.”
Ms. Porowski holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Seton Hall University, a master of arts in teaching from Marygrove College in Michigan, and a bachelor of science from The College of New Jersey.
“Based on Debra’s dedication to the middle school community, she was a natural choice for the vice principal position,” said Jorden Schiff, Superintendent of Schools. “As a teacher, Debra provides constant encouragement and support to students, parents and colleagues alike. I am sure she will continue doing so in her new administrative role.”
