LAWRENCE: Teachers to board: Represent us fairly

Michele D’Angelo, Lawrence Township Education Association
The Lawrence Township Public Schools are among the best.
We have a diverse population which is a source of strength for our district. We have a technology-rich learning environment, a challenging curriculum that focuses on creativity, innovation, cooperation, and problem-solving.
But the education we provide doesn’t stop at academics. Recently, we were named both a New Jersey District of Character and a National District of Character for our strong focus on character development among our students.
As anyone can see from the brief examples above, the Lawrence Township Public Schools are a great place to be. And a large part of that greatness comes from the staff who work there. From the teachers and para-professionals who work with each student, to the secretaries, custodians, security, and buildings and grounds crew who make sure the entire building functions properly. They all play a large part in ensuring our children receive the best education possible, and I am not alone in that opinion. Our own superintendent, Dr. Edwards, specifically references outstanding teaching as one of our attributes when describing our district for the New Jersey Department of Education Report Card. She also uses words like “synergy“ to describe the atmosphere in the district.
I wonder why, then, the school board has such a different view of us. Our on-going efforts and dedication to the children of Lawrence Township are rewarded with: attempts to reduce our access to the time allowed for Family Medical Leave — a move seen by many as discriminatory against women and anti-family in general; vitriolic comments made by a long-time board member both verbally and in print: accusations made by this same member as well as the business administrator that I lied when I stated that our members are bringing home substantially less money than we did in 2010.
Additionally, the board’s negotiations chair made a blatant public denial of an offer made to the LTEA: she dismissed as a rank rumor an offer of 0 percent for three years. That offer was made, and we have the papers to prove it.
These things simply aren’t acceptable for anyone, especially the people who have dedicated their lives to the children and community of Lawrence Township. And because they are not acceptable, we will not put up with them. We will continue to stand up for our rights and do what is necessary to obtain the respect we have earned.
We invite the Board of Education of Lawrence Township to fairly represent its actions toward us and do what is right.
