Police: Visitors to school were not dangerous intruders

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The school day returned to normal after two visitors to Indian Fields Elementary were mistakenly identified as intruders.

Around 9:45 a.m. June 8, staff from Indian Fields contacted South Brunswick police to report that two individuals breached security procedures at the school.

The two individuals had come to the front entrance and were buzzed in and directed to go to the main office. However, the man and woman did not go to the office, and staff could not locate them, according to South Brunswick Police Capt. James Ryan

A dozen South Brunswick police officers responded to the scene and secured the school, Ryan said.

The 500 students were evacuated following normal procedures practiced every month. The South Brunswick School District provided buses for the students to sit inside.

Officers conducted two searches of the school, and detectives interviewed witnesses and visitors who had come to the school around the same time as the incident. Police then checked other area schools to see if anyone matching the description had entered, Ryan said.

Police located the two individuals at a different elementary school. The two were visiting the schools to talk about a summer learning program and mistakenly went to the wrong school. They realized they were not supposed to be at Indian Fields and left the school shortly after entering, according to Ryan.

The students all returned to their classrooms by 10:45 a.m. without incident.
