County’s concerts in the park add sounds to summer sizzle

Middlesex County’s slate of summer concerts will offer attendees a wide range of musical tastes to bring flavor to the warm days and nights ahead.

The Music in the Parks free summer concerts series will kick off in July at four county parks.

Shows at Raritan Bay Waterfront Park, located at the South Amboy/Sayreville beachfront on O’Leary Boulevard, are set for Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m., rain or shine.

In case of inclement weather, attendees will be directed to the South Amboy Middle High School Auditorium. Shuttle bus service will be available every week in the parking lot of the concert venue courtesy of Middlesex County Area Transit.

On July 1, Sandy Sasso’s Swingin’ Big Band will perform. Sasso is a past singer with the Dorsey, Goodman and Riddle big bands. July 8 will bring Walt Wagner and the Serenaders to the park. On July 15, Zydeco a-Go-Go will entertain with New Orleans style rhythm & blues, along with jazz and swing sounds from the 1940s. New to the series are the Cameos, an oldies group slated for July 22. On July 29, Bernie Goydish’s Jersey Polka Stars take center stage.

On Aug. 5, the Tim Gillis Band will perform country music. Aug. 12 is Irish Night, featuring The Perry Brothers. On Aug. 19, Danny V’s 52nd Street Band will offer a tribute to Billy Joel. Aug. 26 will play host to The Robert Murdock Band, a classic rock tribute act.

The Spring Lake Park gazebo on Maple Avenue in South Plainfield will serve as a concert stage all summer, with shows taking place on Sundays from 6:30-8 p.m.

Shows there begin July 5, with The Garden State Symphonic Band providing music from Broadway, the movies and the concert hall with Chris Pedersen at the helm. On July 12, Sandy Sasso’s Big Band takes the stage. July 19 brings Mark Heter and His Band – Merry Melodies, playing music of classic Warner Brothers cartoons by Raymond Scott. Bernie Goydish’s Jersey Polka Stars will close out the month on July 26.

On Aug. 2, The George Krauss Memorial Band presents “Lights! Camera! Action!” with music from the big and small screens, with Barbara Krauss Santoro leading. The Broadway Pops Big Band, led by Greg Giannascoli, will perform Aug. 9. On Aug. 16, the Rave On Band will play the hits of Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly.

The Warren Park Mini Theater on Florida Grove Road in Woodbridge will host concerts from 6-7:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The George Krauss Memorial Band starts the venue’s season July 5. July 12 is Irish Night, with The Perry Brothers led by Ron Dolce. Sandy Sasso’s Swingin’ Big Band will perform July 19, and Mark Heter and His Band – Merry Melodies, will play cartoon classics on July 26.

On Aug. 2, The Broadway Pops Big Band is scheduled. Bernie Goydish’s Jersey Polka Stars are set for Aug. 9.

The Thompson Park gazebo on Forsgate Drive in Jamesburg will host Wednesday afternoon shows from 2-3:30 p.m. Mark Heter and His Band – Merry Melodies will perform July 8. July 15 will bring Zydeco-a- Go-Go to the stage. On July 22, Sandy Sasso’s Swingin’ Big Band will be featured, and on July 29, Bernie Goydish’s Jersey Polka Stars are set to perform.

On Aug. 5, The Broadway Pops Big Band will play. An afternoon of Irish music is set for Aug. 12, with The Perry Brothers. The Garden State Symphonic Band will perform Aug. 19.
