Police have arrested Giver J. Vasquez, 26, of New Brunswick, and charged him with murder, stalking, possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon in the death of Alicia Martinez of New Brunswick.
Police said that the victim and the suspect knew each other and that the shooting was not a random act.
Martinez was shot numerous times in her car around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning in the parking lot of a Docks Corner Road warehouse where she worked. She died from the shooting, according to an autopsy conducted Wednesday afternoon by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner.
Vasquez was found in a friend’s house in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and was taken into custody about 8 p.m. Thursday night.
According to police, after searching the area around the warehouse they could not immediately locate any suspects. After an investigation, they believe Vasquez borrowed a friend’s 2004 Volkswagen Passat and followed Martinez to the parking lot and fired several shots at her while she was still inside the vehicle and then fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle.
Vasquez is being held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, on $2 million bail set in New Jersey. He is awaiting extradition and it is not immediately known when he will be returned to New Jersey.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact South Brunswick Detective Monica Shearer at (732) 329-4646, or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Craig Marchak at (732) 745-3254.
