Jackson spray park construction delayed

JACKSON – A spray park that is scheduled to be constructed next to the I Can playground in the Jackson Justice Complex, West Veterans Highway, may be ready for residents to use by the end of the summer.

Municipal officials previously indicated the spray park would be ready for use earlier in the summer.

Business Administrator Helene Schlegel recently said the project is now anticipated to be completed by the end of the summer.

“This project is a priority for the administration,” Schlegel said in an email.

The Jackson Township Council approved the construction of the spray park last year. Construction on the water amenity has not started and Schlegel did not comment on the reason for the delay.

In 2014, Jackson officials received word from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program that about $150,000 in federal grant money had been awarded to the project.

Drawings for the spray park show a sports theme. Officials said the spray park will feature baseball decorations and an area that resembles a soccer field. The spray park is expected to be accessible to individuals who have a disability.

“This will be an exciting new addition to this complex, which already boasts turf fields, a new volleyball court, a skate park, a hockey rink and various sports fields,” Mayor Michael Reina said in a prepared statement.

The spray park will have a flat surface and proper drainage to keep water from pooling. The facility will not be monitored by a lifeguard and water will only run when an individual enters the spray park and his presence is detected by motion activated bollards, according to municipal officials.

The spray park will be closed during the fall and winter. Officials said the idea for the amenity is to appeal to as many age groups as possible.
