MARLBORO — A pupil at the Marlboro Memorial Middle School has been named one of the winners in the Charles Lafitte Foundation’s Kid’s Corner 2015 Spring Essay Contest.
According to a press release, Amisha Singh, a sixth-grader, was one of three winners in the contest.
The other winners were Aditya Viswanathan Kaliappan, who is an 11th-grader at Clarksburg High School, Clarksburg, Md., and Sanya Mehra, who is a fifth-grader at the Millstone River School, Plainsboro.
Each student received a Kindle Fire and $1,000 for their school library.
The spring essay contest invited all private or public students in grades three through 12 to submit an essay based on works of nonfiction.
To participate, students read any book listed under their corresponding grade level and wrote an essay on how the main character’s most important characteristic helped them overcome any obstacles.
“With a focus on nonfiction and heroic characters, the essays we received from participating students of all ages were insightful and thoughtful,” said Kyra Citron, director of Kid’s Corner.
“The strength of these characters in each book clearly came through in their writing and it was great to see how the books inspired them to apply the lessons learned to their own lives,” Citron said.
The foundation’s Kid’s Corner strives to encourage children to not only have a voice, but a role in helping better their community, according to the press release.
