Summer is in full swing and there is no better way to cool off than to go for a swim in the pool. Unfortunately, there are many individuals who suffer from chronic ear conditions such as ear drainage, or recovering from an ear infection or ear surgery who may not be able to get their ears wet. For these individuals it is necessary to keep their ears dry to prevent more severe problems from developing. It does not mean they cannot go swimming; they just need to take some extra steps to avoid water in the ears.
Today there are many options for this population — both custom and non-custom. Custom swim plugs will require an impression of the ear. They are designed for the individual to utilize while bathing as well as swimming. Custom swim plugs, when fit properly, will keep most of the moisture out of the outer ear.
Non-custom options include moldable silicone ear plugs. These are easy to use and can be found at any local pharmacy.Another option would be reusable swimming ear plugs. These typically last longer, however if the swim plug does not fit properly it is useless.A final option that is popular with children is adjustable headbands. These headbands can be worn over swim plugs to help keep the water out and swim plugs in.
