CRANBURY: Town contracts with new animal shelter

By Jennifer Kohlhepp, Managing Editor
CRANBURY — SAVE Animal Rescue will provide animal sheltering services to Cranbury.
The Township Committee voted unanimously Monday night to execute an agreement with SAVE of Princeton to replace Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter.
Former Helmetta shelter Director Michal Cielesz and Assistant Director Richard Cielesz were each charged with six counts of animal cruelty in connection with substandard conditions at the shelter.
Committeeman Glenn Johnson visited the Helmetta shelter, according to Committeewoman Susan Goetz.
“The question is whether they are doing their job or not and it’s not something we wanted to stay involved in,” Committeewoman Goetz said.
She thanked Township Administrator Denise Marabello and Department of Public Works Director Jerry Thorne for finding SAVE.
“It’s terrific,” Committeewoman Goetz said. “All of the animals collected will be taken to SAVE.”
While SAVE is currently located at 900 Herrontown Road in Princeton, the animal rescue group will be moving to a new facility on Route 601 in Skillman. SAVE does not have a move-in date scheduled, but plans to move this summer as there is still some site work being done, permitting issues to finalize and loose ends to tie up, according to SAVE’s website.
