Area schools cited for providing safe routes

Schools throughout Middlesex County, including Edison, Metuchen and Woodbridge, recently received recognition for their Safe Routes to School programming.

Keep Middlesex Moving (KMM), Inc., Middlesex County’s nonprofit transportation management association, recognized nine county schools and one community. Safe Routes to School is a national movement to make it safer and easier for children to walk and bicycle to school. The recognition program is a way to publicly thank schools and towns for their commitment to health and safety.

“The awardees recognized by KMM have taken the safe and healthy walking and bicycling message to heart by supporting bike rodeos, walking school buses, assemblies and more,” said Peter Bilton, Safe Routes to School coordinator for KMM.

John Marshall Elementary School in Edison and Edgar Middle School in Metuchen both were rewarded First Step status for their programming.

Oak Ridge Heights School in Woodbridge received Bronze-level recognition.

First Step status also went to G. Austin Schoenly and E. R. Appleby Schools in Spotswood, and Highland Park Middle School.

Highland Park’s Irving Primary School, Bartle Elementary School and the Borough of Highland Park all received Bronze status, along with the Greater Brunswick Charter School in New Brunswick.

Across New Jersey, 79 schools or towns achieved First Step status, 32 achieved Bronze, 15 were Silver, and four attained Gold-level recognition.
