Q: I bought a Ram 1500 last year after quite a lot of research, and a big part of my decision was influenced by Consumer Reports naming it best pickup in 2014. This year, there’s no best pickup choice by Consumer Reports. What’s up?
A: Consumer Reports did not choose a pickup truck for 2015. The Ram and GM’s Silverado did not score high enough in reliability (the scoring provided by owners) this time out. The reliability score, coupled with the road tests CR conducts, sums up the ratings it gives vehicles. Also in the pickup category, the Ford 150, and the GM Colorado and Canyon were rolled out too late last year for sufficient information to be gathered on reliability.
Q: We were test-driving the Infiniti Q70 but had decided nothing. As we were wrapping up, the salesman said we should consider the Q70L. We’d already spent enough time talking/testing cars that day and I didn’t want more options so we left. What’s the short form about how the Q70L differs from the Q70 so I can either reject it with no more conversation or tell the man I’m willing to consider it?
A: The two biggest differences between the two are that the Q70L is nearly 6 inches longer (with a roomier back seat), and it costs about $1,500 more than the Q70. There are some other things, too, of course. But length and price are likely to be the factors that will make you interested or not.
If you don’t want a bigger, pricier car, just tell the salesman the Q70L is off the table and focus on what features you want in the Q70.
Q: Help settle this disagreement please. Our daughter will be graduating college in June and has her heart set on a red car. I think red cars have higher insurance rates and that’s just one more expense at a time when her income will be quite limited. I can’t call my insurance agent to ask because my daughter has decided she doesn’t want to use him (long story). The truth?
A: The red car thing is urban myth. Most insurance companies don’t even ask what color the car is when you call for a quote.
